Porcine islet transplantation for the treatment of type I diabetes will enter into clinic


Huasheng Online reported on September 8th:‘We now cooperate with domestic hospitals and we have the ability to treat diabetics, through two-year effort, we did our utmost to save more than 10,000 patients from suffering per year.’ This morning, the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University released the expert review results of the small sample clinical research of ‘neonatal porcine’ islet transplantation for type I diabetes treatment conducted by Professor Wei Wang’s research team, Wei Wang also revealed that the research is in the clinical stage.


Porcine islet transplantation gives patients new life


It is reported that there are about 415 million diabetics worldwide, 109 million and 600 thousand are Chinese patients, ranking the first in the world. Mr. Ma from Shaoyang is one of them, he was diagnosed with type I diabetes at the age of 35 in 2009. ‘I lost 20 pounds in a month and I must control eating fruits and staple food.’  Mr. Ma said. He had to do three or four times of insulin injection every day during his illness, and he had to check blood glucose after every meal. What worries him most is the complication of type I diabetes.


As the third case of porcine islets transplantation, Mr. Ma’s life changed greatly after transplantation. ‘It is two times a day to do insulin injection, and the amount of insulin is reduced by 85%.’ Now, he can work normally, and the euglycemia is maintained after eating.


The curative effect reached the international leading level


In order to solve the shortage of islet donors for transplantation, Professor Wei Wang’s team chose porcine islets to do transplantation, and through their efforts for more than 20 years, it has made a breakthrough.


Professor Wei Wang’s team completed a porcine islet transplantation study of 10 patients with type I diabetes. Most of the patients were unable to take care of themselves because of the severity of their illnesses. After porcine islet transplantation, their conditions were obviously improved, the use of insulin was reduced by more than 60% and the best effect was reduced by 90%. According to the internationally recognized comprehensive score of islet transplantation, the average score was 0.62 points, and it was best to reach 0.88 points (the complete healing of diabetes is 1 point).


In terms of the results of the review, the expert group agreed that after 20 years of research, the project team established the integrated technology system of transplantation donor cultivating-porcine islet extraction-clinical application with reliable bio-compatibility in the world for the first time, which reached the best curative effect of islet xenotransplantation worldwide at present, it can be applied into the treatment of type I diabetes and it has reached the international advanced level. The expert group suggested that the islet xenotransplantation for diabetes treatment could be accepted into the Class-III medical technology management, and the corresponding technical specifications of clinical application shall be worked out to promote the clinical application of the technology.
